1400 steelworkers lay down their work

In the wage dispute in the northwestern german steel industry, around 1,400 employees temporarily stopped work on tuesday.

According to IG metall, nine thyssenkrupp and arcelormittal plants in duisburg, bochum and kreuztal were affected. The actions are scheduled to continue until the fourth round of negotiations on 18. The strike will be continued almost daily in february, an IG metall spokesman announced.

Around 1,000 steelworkers in duisburg and remscheid are again called to strike on wednesday. The actions are to be extended to companies in lower saxony and bremen in the next few days, with the focus so far on north rhine-westphalia.

The main point of contention in the collective bargaining negotiations is the union’s demand for the introduction of a vacation allowance of 1,800 euros, which can be converted into days off.

In addition, IG metall is demanding the following for the approximately 72.000 employees in the northwest german steel industry in north rhine-westphalia, lower saxony and bremen six percent more pay. The employers have not yet made an offer.

Negotiations for the vast majority of german steelworkers will take place in the collective bargaining district. Separate strikes are being held in saarland and for employees in eastern germany.
