200 live games on sky, 106 games on DAZN, and highlights on "sportschau" and "aktuelles sportstudio": this is what the fubball bundesliga will look like on TV from the 2021/2022 season onwards. This is what the deutsche presse-agentur learned from negotiating circles.
The broadcasters and the german soccer league did not want to say anything about it on sunday. The sale of media rights until the 2024/2025 season will be officially confirmed on the monday after the DFL members’ meeting.
The football fans will have to change very little after the next season. Above all, the free-to-air TV classics "sportschau" on ARD and "aktuelles sportstudio" on ZDF will be retained and allowed to show summaries on saturdays as before. According to dpa, the public broadcasters have secured the corresponding rights packages.
Sky remains the most important partner of the 36 bundesliga clubs. The pay-TV station has secured three of the four most important live packages and will be allowed to show games on saturday and also broadcast the popular conference. In addition, matches during the english weeks, the relegation to the 1. League as well as the supercup to the pacts A, B and C.
In contrast to the current and the coming season, however, the league’s long-standing payment champion has fewer games on offer. DAZN, the most important competitor in the auction, has also secured many matches.
The streaming service, which has only been active in germany since 2016 – as also reported by "bild am sonntag" – bought the package D. This includes all games on friday and sunday. Most recently, DAZN had held a package of 40 league matches via a sublicense from eurosport – and after the relaunch following the corona break and eurosport’s announcement, acquired individual lots from the DFL.
Sky has fewer bundesliga games on offer from the next season onwards, but has managed to avoid the worst of it. After losing the TV rights to the champions league, the company from unterfohring was under enormous pressure.
This means that the pay-TV provider will continue to offer a comprehensive soccer program, which, according to dpa, will also include the 2. Bundesliga belongs. The newly introduced saturday evening matches (20.30 o’clock) in the fubball lower house are to run on free-TV on sport1 according to "kicker".
Online retailer amazon, which had been considered a promising candidate in advance, has not bought any of the seven live audiovisual rights packages, as has telekom. Amazon recently caused a stir with the acquisition of premier league and champions league rights. After the mandatory corona break, the internet giant acquired individual games and broadcast them in parallel with DAZN.
Sky remains the most important financial backer of german professional clubs with the purchase of three of the four most expensive rights packages. Currently, an average of 876 million euros per year goes to the league. Figures for the four seasons from 2021 onwards are not yet known.
The detailed results of the almost two-week bidding for the media rights will be published by the DFL on monday. The last auction so far yielded 4.64 billion euros for four seasons. A renewed increase of more than 80 percent, as four years ago, had been described by DFL boss christian seifert in advance as "very unlikely".
However, a complete collapse in revenues was reportedly prevented. Despite the corona crisis, which has hit sky’s and DAZN’s business models particularly hard, the company is once again raking in several billion euros.
The auction was originally scheduled to begin in april and be completed by the beginning of may. However, due to the corona pandemic, the schedule for the betting was stopped. According to its own statement, the DFL, in consultation with the interested parties, had not pushed the auction back even further.
